Pedigree history … Burke's Awesome To A Tee – Sire's Side

Mighty Awesome - APHA

Mighty Awesome, owned by Keith and Cherrye Tittle of Bullard, Texas, had championship breeding. The stallion was sired by two-time APHA national halter champion Barlink Macho Man. His dam was an AQHA mare, Son Sweet Dreams, a great-granddaughter of AQHA Hall of Fame stallion, Two Eyed Jack.

With years of hard work, honesty and integrity, the Tittles guided their stallion to the top of the APHA record books.

Mighty Awesome sired 675 registered Paint offspring to date. More are expected to be registered during 2009, and a limited number are anticipated for 2010. Photo by Ross Hecox.

The stallion is the APHA lifetime leading sire of halter horses, both in point earners and points earned. In addition, he is prominent in several other lifetime leading sires' lists, including Register of Merit earners (#6), Superior earners (#6), Reserve World Championship earners (#6), Reserve World Championships earned (#11), Superiors earned (#18) and Registers of Merit earned (#25).

Jeannie Putney, editor of the  Paint Horse Journal  put her staff in high gear to get the special tribute to one of the industry's most influential stallions into the August issue of the magazine.

“It's hard to say how often a horse like Mighty Awesome comes along,” said Putney. “His impact is literally felt and seen around the globe, which is why the Journal  is honored to pay tribute to this truly magnificent creature and all that he has done for our breed.

“The  Journal  staff has been inundated by touching and delightful stories about Mighty Awesome from people all over the world, at all levels of involvement in the Paint Horse industry,” said Putney. “Although we can't repay Mighty Awesome for all that he's done, we hope the August issue will give readers an idea of the enormity of his impact.”

The Tittles have been touched by the outpouring of tributes from around the world for their stallion, aptly nicknamed “Awesome.”

“Awesome was a joy to have,” said Cherrye Tittle. “I knew he had an impact [on the Paint industry], but I've really been amazed at how much. I always knew he was an amazing horse, but I've been amazed at how many other people know it too.”“The loss of this stallion hit hard,” commented Kath Peterson of Coronation Park Stud in New South Wales, Australia. “Those who met Mighty Awesome loved him. His sweet nature, his commanding presence and the love he showed to Keith and Cherrye will stay forever in my memory.” “The Paint Horse industry has been enhanced many times over by the Mighty Awesome influence,” said Don Fox.

Barlink Macho Man

Barlink Macho Man APHA/AQHA Sorrel Overo Stallion 1982-2004. Macho is designated by the APHA and AQHA as the foundation sire of the Pearl Gene since he is the only horse in both registry's that seems to have initiated this gene. However if you will go look up his pedigree (Barlink Macho Man) at  http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/barlink+macho+man  then thru his dam, Prize's Bar Link APHA/AQHA Sorrel Overo Mare http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/prizes+bar+link  and from her dam My Tontime AQHA, Red Roan mare  http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/my+tontime

Barlink Macho Man at 20 years old

PLEASE NOTE that the Pearl Gene came to Macho thru his dam, granddam via his great granddam My Leo Nita AQHA, buckskin dun roan mare. I had a picture of her at one time and she was a strange color; she had a black mane and tail but her body was a creme color ….and in discussion with Irene Stamatelakys that wrote many of the articles on the Pearl Gene we decided that she had to be the foundation and passed it on down thru the years. Whether she got the gene from My Leo (by Leo) a Creme colored horse that could have carried the diluted Pearl gene or from her dam Orvada who was by a son of King most likely we'll never know. My Leo AQHA AAAT was registered as a buckskin dun roan the pictures I saw of him he showed to be a very light creme color and in the QH Record books was registered as a Creme until such time as they disallowed Albinos, Cremes, Perlinos into the registry and since have rescinded.

At any rate the Pearl Gene is now a registered color with both the AQHA and APHA and can only come thru Barlink Macho Man breeding. The Pearl Color can only come from the gene being passed on by breeding a Macho bred to a Macho bred however the golden sheen is passed on as an underlying color in many of the coats you see of these horses and of which Macho and his Granddam, My Tontime had. They were definitely colored with golden highlights although their base colors were different but it also can show up as a dilutant in many colors also. Let's just say it is unique!!!!!

Two Eyed Jack – AQHA

Two Eyed Jack

As a yearling, Two Eyed Jack was undefeated at halter throughout the Midwest, winning all 13 of his classes and taking seven grand champion titles.  He won seven more grands as a 2-year-old, taking 16 of the 17 halter classes in which he was entered.  On top of that, he earned four western pleasure points.  In 1964, Two Eyed Jack wrapped up an AQHA Champion title and Superior honors in halter, in addition to earning points in western pleasure.

Eventually, Two Eyed Jack earned 217 halter points and 70 grand champions.  He also earned performance points in western pleasure, hunter under saddle, reining, working cow horse and western riding.

Jack was in and out of the show ring until 1979.  By then, his career as a halter and performance horse – impressive as it was – was already being upstaged by the achievements of his get.

Two Eyed Jack sired 1,416 horses, which accounted for 17,029 points in AQHA showing.  Of them, 14 became AQHA World Champions, while seven became AJQHA World Champions.  He sired the very first AQHA Superhorse, Vickie Lee Pine, and nearly 100 of his foals placed at the AQHA World Championship Show.  Twenty-five became open high-point winners, while 55 were reserve high-point horses; eight were youth high-point winners and 29 finished reserve in those ranks.  They account for 242 open Registers of Merit, 66 youth ROMs and six amateur ROMs.  Sixty-nine became Superior performance horses.  But perhaps the most staggering number is 119 – the number of open AQHA Champions sired by Two Eyed Jack.

On May 2, 1991, Two Eyed Jack was put down due to old age.  He was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 1996.

The daddy of 259 starters the last time we looked, Sugar Bars is a familiar name to connoisseurs of the leading sires lists.   He was bred by George E. Wood and foaled at El Paso, Texas, in 1951.   Sired by Three Bars (TB), Sugar Bars is out of Frontera Sugar by Rey, a good son of the well remembered Captains Courageous (TB), sire also of the celebrated Miss Bank.   The dam of Frontera Sugar was the Dun Mare by Ben Hur.

While standing in the ownership of Bud Warren this stallion got such speed merchants as Barface (AAAT), Bar Moore Miss (AAAT), Connie Reb (AAAT), Gofar Bar (AAAT), Johnny Bars (AAAT), Pacific Bars (AAT), Sugar Band (AAAT), Sugar Comb (AAAT), Sugar Rondo (AAAT), Vanna Bar (AAAT) and others too numerous to set down here.   His racing get have earned in excess of $350,000 and he had, at last count, twelve AAAT, fourty-five AAA and fifty-six AA offspring to his credit.   Additionally, he is the father of 641 registered foals and stands eighth among leading sires of Register of Merit qualifiers having fifty-seven or more such get (actually 113), and eighth in the list of those with seven or more AAAT get.   He is the leading living maternal grandsire of ROM get (1945 through 1969).   He has gotten more registered foals than any other sire of Register of Merit qualifiers, an unquestionable testimonial to his long-time popularity with mare owners.

In addition to the Sugar Bars get which have gone to the races, many others have gone the show ring route and some, like Sugaree Bars, have toured both circuits.   She, as it happens, was his first foal to be rated AAA AQHA Champion.

Sugar Bars is currently owned by Sid Huntley and Dean H. Parker and stands at the Huntley Ranch outside Madera, California.   One cannot remember when this stallion did not have a full book.   Mr. Huntley says he bred at least ninety mares each of the past two seasons.

In his straightaway days Sugar Bars was himself a AAA sprinter, one of the first twenty Three Bars' get to go into the then-highest rating.   The others were Bardella, Barjo, Barred, Cee Bars, Deep Water, De Witt Bar, Gold Bar, Ipana Bar, Josie's Bar, Lightning Bar, Make's Bar, Miss Myrna Bar, Miss Wonder Bar, Nug Bar, Rocket Bar, Third Reader, Tonto Bars Gill, War Bar and War Chant.   Certainly their success on the tracks conspicuously contributed to their sire's popularity in the stud.   In 1954 Three Bars (TB) led the all time list of leading sires with twenty AAA, six AA and seven A.   Leo was next with sixteen AAA, twenty-two AA and twenty-one A.   Third on that list was Depth Charge (TB) with ten, seven and eleven.   Piggin String (TB) was fourth with ten, seventeen and sixteen.   Texas Dandy stood fifth with eight, nine and twelve.   Sixth was Hard Twist with six, seventeen and six.   Joe Reed II was seventh with six, twenty-one and twenty.   Eighth was Top Deck (TB) with six, eight and two.   Vandy was ninth with five, five and one. And the tenth on that list was War Bam (TB) with five, one and one.
